Most businesses have employee celebrations BACKWARDS.
Why are you throwing a party when someone leaves? That makes zero sense.
Instead, you should be celebrating their FIRST DAY as a new employee.
Why?
They're nervous. Unsure. Meeting lots of new people. Not entirely convinced they made a good decision to join your company. Trying to get a sense for your culture. Etc.
You can address this by filling their office with balloons. Have a welcome card. Take them to lunch. Make sure their laptop, cards, onboarding forms are ready when they arrive. Make it look like you were anticipating them. ACT EXCITED!!
And to top it off? Send a bottle of champagne to their home and include a card that says: "We CAN'T WAIT to start working with you, we're excited to have you on board. We're going to do great things together!" Bonus points if you address this to their significant other. Chances are their reaction will be "Wow, I think this company is really excited about you. That's amazing."
This is how you create compelling company culture - it starts on day 1.

Career
It's 2026, and career ladders are breaking down as flatter organizations, faster skill change, and AI reduce traditional promotion paths. Research shows high performers now grow by expanding scope, building in-demand skills, moving laterally, and earning trust through outcomes—not by waiting for titles. Employees must manage careers as portfolios of skills and impact, while PeopleOps and HR must redefine growth around scope and mobility, enable managers in leaner orgs, and ensure fair access to opportunity or risk losing top talent.
